What Is an AI PC, and Do We Actually Need One?

Walk into any electronics store this year and you’ll notice a new sticker plastered across laptop displays: „AI PC.” It sits next to the usual specs about processors and storage, promising something faster, smarter, and more capable than the machine you’re currently using. But beneath the marketing language is a genuine shift in how computers are built, and it’s worth understanding what that shift actually involves before deciding whether it’s worth paying extra for.

At its core, an AI PC is a computer built around a dedicated chip called a neural processing unit, or NPU. Traditional computers handle tasks using a combination of a central processing unit and a graphics processing unit, both of which are general-purpose tools that can run almost any kind of software. An NPU is different. It’s designed specifically to handle the kind of math that machine learning models rely on, and it does so while using a fraction of the power a CPU or GPU would need for the same task. That efficiency is the whole point. Running AI features locally, without sending data to a cloud server, means faster response times, better privacy, and less strain on your battery.

This matters because the software we use every day is quietly filling up with AI features. Photo editing tools now offer instant background removal and object recreation. Word processors can summarize documents or suggest rewrites as you type. Video calling software can blur backgrounds, translate speech in real time, or clean up audio automatically. All of these features can technically run on older hardware by sending the work to remote servers, but that introduces lag, depends on a stable internet connection, and raises questions about where your data ends up. An NPU allows these same features to run directly on the device, instantly and privately.

Microsoft has been the loudest voice pushing the AI PC category forward, largely through its Copilot+ PC initiative, which sets minimum hardware requirements for laptops that want to carry the label. To qualify, a machine generally needs an NPU capable of at least 40 trillion operations per second, along with enough memory and storage to support on-device AI processing smoothly. Apple, meanwhile, has taken a similar path with its own chips, building neural engines directly into its M-series processors and using them to power features across macOS and iOS.

So does the average person actually need one of these machines right now? The honest answer is that it depends heavily on how you use your computer. If your daily routine consists of browsing the web, checking email, and working in spreadsheets, an NPU isn’t going to transform your experience in any noticeable way. Most of the AI features currently available are conveniences rather than necessities, and older laptops without dedicated AI chips can still run cloud-based versions of many of the same tools, just with a bit more delay and a dependency on internet access.

Where an AI PC starts to make more sense is for people who work with large amounts of content, whether that’s video editing, photography, writing, or software development. For these users, on-device AI processing can genuinely speed up workflows, cut down on subscription costs tied to cloud-based AI services, and offer more consistent performance regardless of internet speed. There’s also a longer-term argument worth considering. As software companies continue building more AI features directly into their operating systems and applications, having the hardware to support those features locally will likely stop being a luxury and start being closer to a baseline expectation, similar to how solid-state drives eventually replaced traditional hard drives as the standard rather than the upgrade.

There’s also the question of price. AI PCs currently carry a premium compared to standard laptops with similar specs otherwise, and that premium isn’t always justified by what you’ll actually use day to day. If you’re due for a new laptop anyway, choosing one with an NPU isn’t a bad decision, since it future-proofs your purchase without much downside. But upgrading early solely to chase AI features that are still maturing is a different calculation, and one that doesn’t pay off for everyone.

The AI PC label is likely to become less of a marketing term over the next few years and more of a standard spec, the same way built-in Wi-Fi or webcams stopped being selling points once they became universal. For now, though, whether you need one comes down to a simple question: are you already running into the limits of what your current machine can do, or are you being sold on a feature you weren’t missing in the first place?
